In horse racing for Friday, doing Left Coast action with two tracks in California. Not everyone is crazy about Cali, but they still pay on win, place and show.

I decided to change it up a touch and look into the horse racing odds at Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields for Friday. There are plenty of people in the racing industry that turn there nose up to tracks not in Kentucky or in the East, but as we have seen over the last decade in big races, the talent pool is deep out west.

For those that missed it yesterday, this writer/handicapper has been on a bit a role with 25 winners in 24 races and 15 more that hit the tote board. Let’s try and keep the line moving on our free horse racing picks today. (You can watch on NBCSN at 4:00 EDT)

Backstretch News: All but one of our races is a sprint and we start with this one. Busy Paynter is a legit 8/5 chalky favorite, with the best group of Beyer Speed Figures (65-68-69) and will have Santa Anita’s top rider in F. Prat.

When Prat and trainer M. Glatt get together like they are here, they are 3-1 (WP) recently. Uno Trouble Maker, could be just that if she’s in the lane at the first turn. Swirling has Beyer’s of 74 and 80 in two of last three starts and is a threat.

Next is Bella Vita, who has virtually the same numbers as #3 (81-71-68) and Prat on board. Lofty arrives off three wins and a place and is a speedster at 82-82-91. Still, competitive field and #4 is not a lock.

Mongolian Hero has very similar speed numbers (69-74-79) but has not been quite as sharp of late. Could win or finish off the board. Big Hoof Dynamite at 5-1 is of note, with a slew of good starts on the brown stuff and Prat in the saddle.

Backstretch News: Five sprinters have a legitimate chance to win the final battle of the day in Northern Cal. Princess Ashlyn enters off two straight wins. One issue, both were in 2019, as she makes her season debut.

The thinking is she’ll need one race to get back in the groove. Kelly is a contender and has solid digits (72-71-67) proving she will be a factor. But for the W, it is Brilliant Bird because of stronger numbers (68-78-71) and Hernandez in the leather.
